There's no getting around it: there was simply no better summer blockbuster in 2007 than the astonishing The Bourne Ultimatum. It's a film that defies expectations in many ways. Firstly, it's a third entry in a trilogy that by some distance in the best in an already-compelling franchise. Secondly, whenThe Bourne Ultimatum kickstarts with a ferocious energy and pace, you sit there and rightly expect it not to keep the momentum going. But it does. And does it astonishingly well. Just witness the breathless sequence through Waterloo Station, convince yourself that the film has peaked then, then go and watch them top it later on in the movie. The film itself has many trump cards, not least its leading man. Matt Damon fits the character of reluctant lead Jason Bourne perfectly, but the trick is to give him some excellent supporting players to work against. Thus, The Bourne Ultimatum also stars the excellent pair of David Straitharn and a returning Joan Allen, along with Albert Finney, Paddy Considine and Julia Stiles too. But the hidden hero of The Bourne Ultimatum is director Paul Greengrass. Arguably one of the most interesting and talented directors working today (he was rightly Oscar-nominated for his haunting United 93), Greengrass has fashioned a genuinely thrilling action thriller, that bursts with an energy and relentlessness that you simply have no right to expect. That he also managed to wrap up the story Jason Bourne's quest for his identity in the midst of it is all the more astonishing. A terrific end to an already-impressive trilogy, there's little else ot say about The Bourne Ultimatum, which is simply a near flawless piece of blockbuster entertainment. a great end to a great trilogy! unlike some it did not dissappoint and stuck to what it does best........... great action, car chases, and great close combat sequences.

The Bourne franchise ups the stakes in the third instalment with Matt Damon determined to find out his true past much to the continued chagrin of the CIA who want to stop him. I enjoyed this one, had a bit more than the first two, good special effects and Damon put a sterling perfomance alongside Julia Stiles. The new assassins certainly push him to the limit and the twist at the end held my breath for a while and concluded the film well imo.

The third (and supposedly final) film in the Bourne series, the Bourne Ultimatum finds Matt Damon's Jason Bourne still on an apparent never-ending quest to find his true identity. Anyone seeing this film will no doubt have seen the first two- which is a good job as the film offers no concessions to the casual viewer, tipping us straight in where the last film left off. Having hit the ground running, the movie simply never stops. Plot exposition has to be barked out in the briefest intervals between action scenes, leaving the viewer as breathless as the characters. There's something about CIA black ops and enough bad guys to link the action together, and that's about it.
The action, however, is simply incredible. From a superbly staged sequence in Waterloo station to one of the toughest fist fights in cinema, director Paul Greengrass delivers on every level and achieves the near-impossible in creating tension in what is often a formulaic genre. Personally I enjoyed the handheld camerawork which gets you close to the action, although some viewers have found the resultant shaky visuals offputting.
Matt Damon plays Bourne with the same unsmiling intensity he brought to the first two films. A few disconnected flashbacks does not character development make, however- and what the Bourne Ultimatum lacks is characters to identify with. Joan Allen and Julia Stiles do their best with underwritten roles, but the moment when Damon's past is finally revealed feels underwhelming as a result- but never mind, Greengrass soon whisks us off to yet another action scene.
All this makes the Bourne Ultimatum very difficult to rate. For pure action it must be one of the best films of the last few years. For me, however, I'm looking for a little more, and I found the movie strangely unsatisfying- and not as good as the first two. I wouldn't bet against Jason Bourne making a comeback one day, but I hope they will find him a character by then.
Out of breath having just watched this film July 19, 2008
Loved the first 2 Bourne films. This film has even more action, but less of a 'story' and less development of the main characters. If I am to be critical the action photography is TOO fast, so you cannot fully absorb and enjoy what are some great sequences. Please SLOW down the action when Bourne 4 appears! Was on the edge of my seat watching this film, which is without doubt one of the best films of 2007.

The Bourne Ultimatum is a tightly plotted and fast paced action thriller. The character Jason Bourne continues to develop and unfold in spite of this being the 3rd film in the series. I felt that this was a vast improvement on the 2nd film which was a little hard to follow in places. If this film has one irritation it is the flashy camerwork which at times makes the action hard to follow, and is a little over-stylized unneccessarily.
However, the film never feels like it's starting to drag at any point and the performances are all great. The plot is full of clever twists and reveals to, so there's no time for your brain to switch off. A very impressive 3rd part of the series.
