Feel-good fun-loving drama at its best! August 11, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Thought I'd have a quick peep when it dropped on my doormat, ended up watching all six episodes in the same day! Can't wait to watch the second series.
A great series that thankfully doesn't fall into the obvious sit com scenarios that you think it's going to.
Superb August 3, 2008 Somehow I had managed to totally miss out on G&S when it was on TV. I had heard that it was good but never actually caught a single episode.
So I got this DVD - and I was instantly hooked and ended up watching all 6 episodes back to back in a single sitting. It is stunning - well written, great characters, great actors (Rob Brydon is a genius) and life-affirming charming.
I haven't been so bowled over by a British comedy so since Phoenix Nights or Spaced.
I'm now off to get the DVD of the second series.
Big disappointment June 15, 2008 3 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have recently discovered modern British comedy, and I am a HUGE fan of comedies like Shameless, Phoenix Nights, Max and Paddy's road to nowhere, Extras and The office. This comedy was recommended to me based on my opinion on Shameless, which I think is the best TV-show ever. However, "Gavin and Stacey" doesn't even get close to any of the shows mentioned. To me, it seems "stiff", very "acted" and WAAY to sweet. The character Nessa is a bit funny, and rescues it from being a complete disaster, but in general I find the rest of the cast quite boring or even repulsive. (Couldn't stand the smiley doll Stacey.)I was very disappointed.
Very fuuny the best thing on bbc 3... June 4, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This really is worth buying, it's so funny it's the best thing on bbc 3 "i want lie to you" all the cast just fit so well and they all have there own part in this great show, these only one down side and that there only making a christmas speacil and not a 3rd.
"Fags and weed, glue and speed, but I draws the line at crack!" May 21, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Essex lad Gavin (Matthew Horne) falls in love with Welsh sweetheart Stacey (Joanna Page) after a brief work related telephone relationship. Stacey and her sarcastic chain smoking mate Nessa (writer Ruth Jones) head to London to meet Gavin and his fat mate Smithy (writer James Corden).
Gavin and Stacey was actually a surprising joy when I eventually got around to watching it two years after everyone else as usual. I hate romantic comedies and anything twee but I found G&S quite sweet in a very amusing way. Gavin & Stacey themselves are a bit wet and the shows funniest characters are support. Jones is very funny as Nessa and Rob Brydon's Uncle Bryn raises a few laughs but the real star of the show is Smithy. Corden's drunken, foul mouthed everyman comes out with some genius lines ("Have you got any johnnies? I ain't going in there bareback!") and his drunken quiz hosting skills remind me of my local.
